Malaysia Electric Two-Wheeler Market drivers:
The Malaysia
electric two-wheeler market is experiencing an upsurge in demand during the
forecast period. This is mainly due to the rising number of government
initiatives to support the adoption of electric vehicles in the country.
Moreover, the growing penetration of motorcycles as compared to the three and
four-wheelers is another factor propelling the growth of the market in the
upcoming years. The accelerating demand for more individual mobility and the
increasing number of offers on an electric scooter are some other factors
attracting many customers towards the market. The government of Malaysia is
focusing on the electrification of two-wheelers, coupled with the rising
efforts to make Malaysia the regional hub of energy-efficient vehicles are
significant factors supporting the market growth. According to the United
Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) 21st Conference of
Parties (COP21), Malaysia pledged to reduce the carbon emission intensity level
by 2030. The country is planning to cut the carbon intensity by 45 percent of
2005’s emission levels. This initiative is indirectly motivating the people to
opt for electric two-wheelers during the forecast period.
As per the National Electric Mobility Blueprint, the country
focuses on having 100,000 electric motorcycles, 100,000 electric cars, and
125,000 charging stations by 2020. The government is also encouraging the use
of vehicles using green technology by implementing various initiatives such as
a 50 percent decrease in road tax for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The
ministry has set up a special body, “Vehicle Type Approval,” which focuses on
identifying and approving green technology vehicles, especially in lorries and
buses, to reduce the use of CO2 emitting vehicles. On the other hand, the high
cost of the electric vehicle battery will hamper the growth of the market.
